What high yield words/clues are often used on crossword puzzles?
Hi, I know there are so many basic answers used on crossword puzzles again and again. Does anyone know of a list on the web or some of their own contributions that show up time and time again?
I’ll start with an example,
fencers foil–>epee
I have seen so many answers be epee, also etui as well for pin cushion type thing. Those who know what I am talking about understand, what words are high-yield crossword answers?
Being an avid cryptic fan myself, I have both admiration and sympathy for those who set them. Words with many vowels are priceless for intersections. Other favourites are -
“ED,” Editor, newsman or “Top journalist” (To butter up the boss.)
AB, RN, Tar and Salt for sailors.
GI, RE (Royal Engineers) RA (Royal Artillery) for soldiers and, in the case of RA – gunmen!
The suffix IOUS referred to as debt.
Words that have several anagrams.
Words like upset, unfortunate, mad, bad and made up to cue anagrams.
Money referring to “L” and “P.”
The directions N S E W referred to as “points.”
